PALM SUNDAY

This day marks the beginning of Holy Week, commemorating Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The Mass includes the blessing and procession with palm branches (symbolizing the crowd’s welcome), followed by the reading or chanting of the full Passion narrative from one of the Gospels.

TENEBRAE
Tenebrae Service at 6PM
Led by St Patrick Youth
An ancient service (Latin for “darkness” or “shadows”) which we hold on Wednesday evening. It features solemn chants, psalms, and Scripture readings about Christ’s Passion, with candles extinguished one by one until the church is in near-darkness, symbolizing the darkness at Christ’s death. A final loud noise evokes the earthquake and chaos following the Crucifixion.

Part of the solemn Celebration of the Passion of the Lord (not a Mass), this ritual involves the unveiling of a crucifix, followed by the faithful approaching to venerate it—often by kissing, touching, or genuflecting—while prayers like the Reproaches are sung. It expresses sorrow for sin and gratitude for Christ’s redemptive sacrifice on the Cross.
