What is the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick?

The Anointing of the Sick is an opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the rites of Anointing, and if appropriate Viaticum. (Viaticum is the final giving of Holy Communion to the sick person approaching death.)

The Rites include

  • A Penitential Prayer
  • Liturgy of the Word or a short reading from Scripture
  • Priest lays hands on the sick person
  • Anointing with the oil of the sick on the hands, and forehead

Who can administer the Sacrament?

Only a priest or bishop can administer the Sacrament, but all Christians are called to pray for the sick.

We do not have to wait until we are near death to receive the sacrament; we need to make a careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness. When a person is anointed, it is hoped that if it is God’s will, they will be physically healed from the sickness, but if there is not physical healing, there will be spiritual healing. In the Sacrament of the Sick, the person receives peace and courage to deal with the difficulties of the illness.

We encourage those who have the following conditions to approach this Sacrament:

• Those who have been recently diagnosed or are suffering with a serious illness

• Those preparing for major surgery

• Those struggling with mental illness

• Those whose age or physical condition has begun to limit their independence.

Please join us every third Monday of the Month at 12:00 pm for Communal Anointing of the Sick; come celebrate God’s merciful healing and the tremendous power of this Sacrament.
